The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to trade for quarterback Joshua Dobbs in a deal with the Cleveland Browns, the teams announced Thursday.
The Browns will get the 2024 fifth-round selection Arizona had received from the Philadelphia Eagles in their tampering settlement; Cleveland also will send a 2024 seventh-rounder to the Cardinals.
You might be wondering what the massive mistake was. No, the massive mistake was not getting Joshua Dobbs. The massive mistake was what they missed out on among Quarterbacks. The Cardinals got Dobbs and a 7th-round pick for a 5th-round pick. There was a quarterback who was recently traded for a 4th round pick…that player was Trey Lance. All they had to do is either offer the 4th round pick or maybe add a 7th round pick to the trade and they could have gotten Trey Lance over Joshua Dobbs. Once again, we don’t mind Dobbs but Lance gives you more upside.
Here is what could have happened:
Trey Lance plays really well and the Cardinals decide they might want to move forward with him. (I know they are going for Caleb Williams but they are going to need the first pick to get him. If they don’t then they will still need to figure out QB if they want to move off Kyler Murray)
Trey Lance plays well and they trade him for a lot more than they gave up. Imagine if Trey Lance shined in the games he played. Every team without a QB would be interested and you could’ve turned Lance into something far better than a 4th round pick.
Trey Lance plays terribly. As with anything in life, nothing is a certainty. If the trade didn’t work out then you lost two picks but at least you took a chance and Lance’s poor performance likely means you are drafting first and getting Caleb Williams.
